The short answer
OpenAI Astra and Google Project Astra are unrelated projects. OpenAI’s Astra story is about mathematical research results generated by an internal model. Google’s Project Astra is about a universal assistant that sees, hears, remembers, and acts across devices and Google products.
Research model
Multimodal assistant prototype
Organization: OpenAI.
Organization: Google DeepMind.
Primary interaction: generating long mathematical arguments and formalizing them in Lean.
Primary interaction: live audio/video conversation, screen sharing, visual understanding, tool use, and cross-device memory.
Public availability: not announced.
Official page says it is a research prototype used and refined by a limited number of trusted testers.
Relationship to Gemini: not announced as a Gemini product.
Relationship to Gemini: Google says capabilities are being brought to Gemini Live and other experiences.
Why the distinction matters
The shared name can create false search results and inflated expectations. A page about a camera-aware assistant is not evidence that OpenAI’s research model is available, and a mathematical announcement is not a product specification for Google’s assistant.
