What GPT-5 is
OpenAI’s current general-purpose flagship, available in ChatGPT and through the API in several sizes. It answers in seconds to minutes, handles text and images, reasons step by step when asked, and covers the broad middle of what people use AI for: writing, code, analysis, and conversation.
What Astra is
GPT-6 Astra is a released model with access expanding. OpenAI also credits it with ten new results on open mathematical problems, a Critical cybersecurity capability assessment, and support for computer use, browsing, software engineering, science, and professional work. Those official claims still do not replace independent task testing.
Why no benchmark settles this
A fair comparison still needs both models on the same tests under known constraints. OpenAI’s Astra record now publishes a model ID, limits, prices, and a narrow cyber comparison, but it does not establish a general head-to-head suite or independent reliability result. Solved open problems and cyber results prove something real—and prove nothing about email, code review, or any task you would actually hand either model tomorrow.

Unproven in general. OpenAI reports a narrower cyber comparison in which Astra is more capable and more token-efficient than GPT-5.6 Sol, but nothing public shows how Astra compares with GPT-5 across writing, coding, or general work. Staged access is not the same as an independent benchmark.
Will GPT-5 become obsolete when Astra ships?
The released record frames Astra as a model for difficult end-to-end work, while GPT-5 remains a broad, established option. OpenAI has not announced that Astra replaces GPT-5 across every task or plan.
