What Gemini is today
Google’s frontier line, currently led by Gemini 3.6 Flash — a fast, inexpensive, million-token-context workhorse across text, image, video, and audio, available the day it was announced in the Gemini app, the API, and Google’s developer tools. Gemini 4 has been publicly teased with no date.
What Astra is today
Ten solved open problems, a 249-page manuscript, Lean 4 certificates, and reporting that describes a family built for multi-agent work sustained over hours or days. Everything else — access, pricing, naming, timing — is not announced.
The two Astras
Google also runs a project called Project Astra — an assistant prototype that watches, listens, and remembers across devices. It shares nothing with OpenAI’s Astra except four letters. A headline about “Astra” can mean either one; the untangling lives here.
What to watch
- The federal review clock: early September 2026 is the earliest plausible Astra window.
- Gemini 4 — if it arrives before Astra opens, the frontier comparison resets.
- Whether Astra shows capabilities outside mathematics; the announcement answers exactly one question about it.
Questions people ask
Is Astra better than Gemini?
Not testable. Astra’s public record is ten solved open problems in mathematics; Gemini’s is a year of benchmarks and daily use. They cannot be run on the same tests because only one of them can be run at all.
Is Google’s Project Astra the same as OpenAI’s Astra?
No. Google’s Project Astra is an assistant prototype built around live video, audio, and memory. OpenAI’s Astra is an unreleased reasoning model family. The shared name is a coincidence.
Should I wait for Astra instead of using Gemini?
Astra has no date and may ship narrowly at first. Gemini, ChatGPT, and Claude exist today; waiting buys nothing that starting now does not.
Does Google have an answer to Astra?
Gemini 4 has been publicly teased, and DeepMind has its own mathematics track record — AlphaProof reached silver-medal standard on International Mathematical Olympiad problems in 2024. Whether Gemini 4 targets Astra’s long-horizon, multi-agent territory is not announced.
